“Mindfulness is not just for Buddhists — it is for all beings”
A commemoration of the International Day of Vesak 2026 was held on May 12, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. The program was co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Thailand and Sri Lanka to the United Nations and brought together representatives from the international Buddhist community, diplomats, and guests.
The observance of Vesak at the United Nations was established under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 54/115, adopted in 1999. The resolution recognizes the International Day of Vesak in honor of the profound contributions Buddhism—one of the world’s oldest spiritual traditions—has made, and continues to make, to the spiritual development of humanity over more than two and a half millennia. The International Day of Vesak is now observed annually at United Nations Headquarters and other United Nations offices worldwide, in coordination with relevant UN bodies and Permanent Missions.
During the ceremony, Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, leader of the Walk for Peace monastic team, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the universal value of mindfulness and loving-kindness as practical tools for cultivating inner peace and fostering harmony in the world.
Emphasizing the inclusiveness of these teachings, he stated:
“Mindfulness is not just for Buddhists — it is for all beings.”
His message underscored the timeless relevance of the Buddha’s teachings and their capacity to nurture compassion, understanding, and peace across all cultures and communities.
