Walk for Peace

“I have love for all beings”

Hello, my name is Derek Woodard, and I had the honor of walking alongside the monks during the Walk for Peace.
People often asked me, “Why are you walking? Why are you here?” The answer is simple: I have love for all beings.
This journey meant just as much to me as it did to the Venerable monks. There was no way I could pass up the opportunity to be part of something so meaningful. It was a chance to do something I had always dreamed of—to make a difference in this world. I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
At the beginning, I didn’t fully understand the impact this walk would have, but I believed in its potential. I told myself that if this walk could change even one life, then every hardship along the way would be worth it.
And there were challenges—many of them. But I never felt discouraged. I never thought about quitting. Even when loved ones asked me to return home, and even when some team members suggested I step away due to health concerns, none of that mattered. The mission of peace was my only focus.
This journey became a powerful experience of self-reflection and growth. Watching the monks live so selflessly each day was truly inspiring. I witnessed firsthand the hardships they endured, yet they continued to give without hesitation. Through them, I realized how little I truly understood about sacrifice, compassion, humility, and love.
This journey taught me all of those things.
I am deeply grateful to Bhikkhu Pannakara for allowing me to be part of his vision. I am also thankful for the many wonderful people I met along the way who helped make this walk a success.
May you all be well, happy, and peaceful.

Thank you, Derek, for your dedication and for “always being there.” In every photo and video, I naturally looked at the monks, but I definitely looked toward the end of the line, where you and Jesse walked behind them as guards to protect them 🙏

Thank you for being who you are 🥰

  • Beautiful. Derek, your compassion, dedication, and love were so evident. I will never forget you. It’s been beautiful to see you in the past few months, even briefly, as you made so many trips to the DFW airport. May you be well, happy , and peaceful. Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu. So much merit.
