Planting Seeds of Peace

My name is Leslie Ramos, and I had the privilege of volunteering in several capacities during the Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara’s Walk for Peace journey in Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland, as well as during the Vesak Celebration.
I received a message from Derek informing me that Elevate: A Buddhist Journal was inviting people to share their experiences and reflections from the Walk for Peace and Vesak Celebration. I would like to share how this extraordinary journey has touched and transformed my life.

The Walk for Peace reaffirmed something deeply important within me: meaningful change begins with changing ourselves first. Having recently retired from active-duty military service in August 2025, I entered a new chapter of my life with a desire to slow down, reflect, and follow a path of greater mindfulness and inner peace.
I have learned that peace does not depend on whether others walk the same path with us. While it is natural to seek companionship and understanding from others, I have come to realize that my own commitment to peace must begin within myself. I choose peace—not only for myself, but for all beings.
Witnessing and volunteering throughout this historic journey—from their walk across Virginia, Washington, DC, and Maryland to the unforgettable Vesak Celebration in Fort Worth—has deeply inspired me. One of the most meaningful moments was participating in the preparation and lighting of the 24,000 candles during the celebration. That experience remains unforgettable.
From the first time I encountered the monks during their journey to the moments when I volunteered at each stop, I felt something gradually changing within me. Their presence, their discipline, and their message of peace touched my heart in a way that words cannot fully express.
Since February 12, I have begun practicing meditation regularly. Although I do not meditate every single day, the days when I do practice create a noticeable difference in my outlook and awareness. I move through life with greater calm, focus, and presence. I find myself less distracted by worldly concerns and more connected to the peace within.
This inner peace has become an important part of my life, and I can see how it positively influences the people around me.
To me, this is the essence of the Walk for Peace. It is a reminder that calm and compassionate individuals, through their actions and presence, can inspire profound change. They ask for nothing in return. Their message is simple: discover mindfulness and peace within yourself, and share that peace with the world.
Imagine if each of us set aside our differences and added even a small measure of peace to our daily lives, regardless of our backgrounds, beliefs, or circumstances. Together, through mindful living and compassionate action, we can transform the world.
I have begun planting seeds of peace and loving-kindness within myself and extending them outward. Through this journey, I have experienced a greater sense of lightness, harmony, and connection. The power of collective intention for peace is truly unstoppable.
With gratitude and respect,
Leslie “Stella” Ramos
